Born in Tucson. Raised in Nogales.
I was born in Tucson, Arizona, and raised in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. At 18, I returned to the United States with one dream in my heart: to become a teacher.
But above all, my greatest pride is my family. As a firefighter’s wife, I understand sacrifice and the critical importance of public safety. As a mother of four, I have raised children who are deeply engaged in our community. My oldest daughter graduated as valedictorian from Rio Rico High School, now studies at Arizona State University, and serves proudly in the Arizona National Guard.
From my beginnings as a young woman working at McDonald’s and learning English, to becoming an educator, author, nonprofit leader, and advocate, my story is proof that with hard work and opportunity, anything is possible.
I know the opportunities and challenges facing our district, because I live them every day as a first responder’s wife, small business owner, and community leader.
I am Maritza Lynn Higuera. A voice for families. A vision for Arizona. And I am ready to bring our shared values of service, sacrifice, and opportunity to the Arizona House of Representatives.
From Tucson to Nogales, from learning English while working her first job to becoming an educator, mother, community leader, and candidate, Maritza’s journey reflects the strength of the families she fights for.
I was born in Tucson, Arizona, and raised in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. At 18, I returned to the United States with one dream in my heart: to become a teacher.
At the time, I didn’t speak English, and my first job was at McDonald’s. I worked hard, studied the language, and never gave up on that dream.
That journey shaped me into who I am today: a wife, mother, educator, community leader, and now candidate for the Arizona House of Representatives.
From 2004 until recently, I devoted my career to Head Start programs, beginning as a teacher aide and working my way up to teacher, site supervisor, health and nutrition specialist, and ultimately Coordinator serving four counties.
Through this work, I witnessed the challenges families face and the profound impact that opportunity, education, and support can make.
I proudly serve as a Board Member at Large for PPEP, Inc., where I advocate for education and economic opportunity. As a Rotary International member, I work with civic leaders to bring forward solutions to local and global needs.
As President of Fundación Honoris Causa Arizona Chapter, I have helped expand educational and cultural opportunities across borders, efforts that earned recognition at the Mexican Senate.
I also partner with international organizations such as Consejo de Comunidades Hispanas, Iberoamericanas, CREA LatinX and MORE Latinoamérica, collaborating with leaders worldwide to promote education and business opportunities.
Together with my husband, I co-own the M&M Family Orchard Educational Ranch, a space where families come together to learn through agriculture, culture, and traditions.
I also support his nonprofit, Public Safety Global Alliance, which provides training, education, and lifesaving equipment to firefighters in countries in need.
As an author of bilingual children’s books, I write to celebrate resilience, family values, and the heroism of first responders.
One of my books reached families around the world, becoming a bestseller and bringing pride to Southern Arizona.
